Workshop Overview
The AP U.S. Government and Politics APSI offers both new and experienced teachers strategies and resources to plan and lead an effective and engaging semester-long or year-long course.
AP U.S. Government & Politics serves as an ‘owners manual’ for effective civic participation by students, both by teaching them the structures of government and introducing them to the core ideologies of contemporary American politics. This APSI will be grounded in the Course and Exam Description. Teachers will build lessons, activities, and assessments focused on student mastery of AP exam skills while also building those lessons around current and relevant examples to bolster student engagement. Each day, teachers in the institute will work closely with one of the four Free Response Question types, understanding how the required disciplinary skills work in tandem with the five units: Foundations of Democracy, Branches of Gov’t, Civil Liberties & Civil Rights, Political Ideologies, and Political Participation. Teachers will identify ways to incorporate the ten Foundational Documents and 15 required Supreme Court cases into engaging lessons that also prepare students for the AP Exam. In addition, teachers will gain familiarity with the resources on the AP Classroom website including the test bank, personal progress checks, daily lesson videos, and pacing guide. The presenter will also provide personally-generated resources and sample lesson plans for all five units.

How Online Workshops Will Work
No one wants to sit and watch a 32-hour long webinar, so we are working closely with our consultants to develop a modified course schedule that allows you greater flexibility, but still gives you the knowledge and skills you need.
Live-online instruction will be conducted through Zoom while asynchronous learning assignments will be managed through Canvas, the University’s learning management system (LMS).

Meet the Instructor
Christopher Lundgren
Christopher Lundgren is the Social Science Dept. Chair, AP U.S. Government & Politics, and Economics teacher at KIPP Nashville Collegiate High School. A classroom teacher for 16 years, including six with APGov, Christopher has taught five different AP courses as well as history-focused resource classes for students who need additional support. He taught for eight years at elite private schools and is now in his eighth year at Collegiate, a Title I charter school whose mission is to create a path to college for Nashville’s students of color.
Christopher has served the College Board as an APGov Mentor and Consultant and as an exam reader since 2018. In 2020, he was part of a two-person team that wrote daily APGov lesson plans for the KIPP Foundation’s AP for All initiative; the plans are used by KIPP teachers throughout the country. The following year, he revised those lessons to reflect best practices for culturally-responsive teaching of the APGov curriculum. In addition, Christopher trained KIPP APGov teachers from across the country in effective virtual instruction during online learning and serves as an instructional coach at Collegiate, helping social science teachers improve classroom management and their students’ academic achievement. He has written assessment materials for several social science courses including APGov for Albert.io, a test-practice website.
In addition to academic instruction, Christopher is the Youth in Government advisor and Girls' Soccer coach for KIPP Collegiate, an instructor of Shotokan Karate, and serves on the board of the Tennessee Environmental Council. He holds a B.A. in Biology from the University of Chicago and master’s degrees in religion and history from Yale and the University of Virginia, respectively. When not teaching or writing, Christopher spends time with his wife and three school-aged children and enjoys drinking espresso in order to keep up with them.

Refund Policy
Attendance Policy
Participants are required to attend all 32 hours of their respective APSI workshop to receive a certificate of completion. Additionally, the workshop fee is due in full regardless of a participant’s attendance. Participants who do not attend all 32 hours of the workshop are still liable to pay the full fee.
