Other General Shortcuts
- Use common math symbols, like Σ for sum or ≠ for not equal
- Use only the first syllable of a word: cap=capitalism, pol=politics, or Chatt=Chattanooga
- Omit vowels; retain only enough consonants to recognize the word: bkgd=background or btwn=between
- Spell out really short words like in, to, or key
- Leave out words like a or the
- If you write out a term, phrase, or name, substitute initials later in your notes: University of Tennessee at Chattanooga becomes UTC
