Peer Academic Coach

Description: Peer Academic Coaches serve in a one-on-one academic mentorship role for students who want to improve their organizational abilities, time management, study skills, and more. As a more experienced learner, you will connect with students who want to improve their learning abilities. Meetings might be held only once or on a regular basis. The Peer Academic Coach position is intended to be held for a full academic year. During the Spring Semester, Peer Academic Coaches work with students in a University Studies Course assisting students on a bi-weekly basis as they progress through a curriculum designed to improve academic skills.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA at UTC
  • Enrolled or planning to enroll in the Fall 2024 semester
  • Junior or Senior status in the Fall 2024 semester
  • Must be available for pre-semester training and regular staff meetings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Time Commitment: 

  • Fall 24 Semester AND Spring 25 Semester - position requires a 1 academic year commitment
  • In-Person pre-semester training
  • 3 - 7 hours per week of student meetings, based on scheduled appointments
  • 1-hour weekly staff meeting
  • occasional additional opportunities for presenting and tabling

Training: 

  • Training dates are TBD and are based on newly hired Peer Coaches' schedules. Training will be held directly before the semester begins and is paid.
  • Training attendance is mandatory.
  • Asynchronous online training requirements will be completed as needed. 

Compensation: $14/hour

Peer Tutor

Description: Peer tutors work with students in one-on-one, or small group settings to provide personalized assistance to students who want to improve their understanding of a specific subject. As a peer tutor, you will often assist fellow students by working through homework, quiz/test preparation and review, and general study techniques. Tutoring sessions are appointment based, with some opportunities for walk-in tutoring hours.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA at UTC
  • Enrolled or planning to enroll in the Fall 2024 semester
  • Upperclassman (30+ credit hours earned before the start of the Fall 2024 semester.
  • Taken the applied-for course(s) at UTC and earned an A or B.
  • Must be available for pre-semester training and regular staff meetings.

Time Commitment: 

  • Fall 2024 semester commitment
  • In-person pre-semester training prior to the start of the semester
  • Weekly Staff Meetings
  • up to 10 hours per week, based on scheduled appointments

Training: 

  • Training dates are TBD and are based on newly hired Peer Tutors' schedules. Training will be held directly before the semester begins and is paid.
  • Asynchronous online training requirements will be completed as needed. 

Compensation: $13 per hour

Supplemental Instruction Leader

Description: Under the supervision of the Supplemental Instruction Program Coordinator, SI Leaders are trained in planning and facilitating collaborative and group learning in regularly scheduled study sessions (a.k.a., SI sessions) for UTC students who are enrolled in targeted courses. The SI sessions are preplanned, scheduled group meeting times in which SI Leaders help students in the SI session interact with the material in a more engaging way. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Enrolled as an undergraduate student in the semester hired as an SI Leader 
  • Sophomore, Junior, or Senior status (second-semester Freshmen considered with a faculty letter of recommendation) 
  • 3.0 Cumulative GPA 
  • Taken the SI Course at UTC and earned an A 
  • Available to attend each SI Course lecture 

Time Commitment: 

  • 9-10 hours per week
  • 3 hours course lecture attendance
  • 2 hours SI session including bi-weekly observations
  • 3 hours of lesson plan and materials preparation weekly in the SI Lab
  • 1 hour staff meeting per week (Meetings will be biweekly starting in week 7)
  • 1.5 hours for faculty meetings per month
  • One semester commitment (additional semesters based on evaluation, need, and budget)

Training: 

  • Training will be conducted over 3, 4-hour meetings and is paid. Training dates are TBD and are based on hired SI Leader schedules. Training will be held directly before the semester begins. 
  • Asynchronous online training requirements will be completed as needed. 
  • An SI Leader candidate’s availability and flexibility will be a determining factor for an employment offer. 

Compensation: $14 Per Hour
