How to apply to the Brock Scholars Program

Apply for Admission to UTC

Step 1: First, you must apply for admission to UTC.  

You do not need to wait for your admission decision from the Undergraduate Admissions Office, but you must initiate that application process—including paying the required admission fee—or we cannot consider your Brock Scholars application. 

Step 2: Complete and submit your Brock Scholars Program Application. 

To apply click the above link and it will take you to the UTC Application Portal.  You will use the same email address and password as you used to complete your admissions application to UTC.  Once logged in, select the blue button that says “Other Applications” and you will see the option to select Brock Scholars Application from that drop down.

The Brock Scholars application is used for determining admission to the Brock Scholars Program and for the awarding of William E. Brock, Jr. Scholarships. Please remember that you are applying to participate in a program and NOT a scholarship. 

Step 3: Register for a candidate conference. All applicants are required to register for one of these days to be eligible for admission.

All materials, including your recommendation, must be received no later than 12pm/noon EST on January 21, 2023 for your application to be considered complete and eligible for review.

Elements of the Brock Scholars Program Application 

Required Items:

Extracurricular and Co-Curricular Activities: 

• Please list  no more than three (3) extracurricular or co-curricular activities that have contributed significantly to your personal growth. Please include the length of time that you have participated in this activity, Beneath each activity please provide a brief one to two sentence statement on why/how this activity was meaningful or impactful to your high school experience. 
  • If you were unable to participate in extracurricular or co-curricular activities please use this space to tel us how you spent your time outside of the classroom. If you have a job, you can include that in this section. 
  • Please do not simply list all of your activities and involvement in this section. *This is not an opportunity to list activities in which you’ve held a leadership position, experiences you’ve had working an after-school job, your participation in athletic activities, etc. We’re looking for anything outside of your regular coursework that has contributed to your growth as a person. If you have had other familial obligations or less conventional extra-curricular activities, please include them if they have contributed meaningfully to your growth.

• Identify no more than three (3) high school courses that have had the most impact on your academic experience. Beneath each course please provide a brief one to two sentence statement on why or how this course was meaningful or impactful. Remember, impactful does not always mean positive. This is an opportunity to tell us why or how a particular course influenced you regardless of the grade you may have received. 
  • Please do not simply list your Advanced Placement(AP), International Baccalaureate(IB) or Dual Enrollment Courses here. 

 

Short Answer Essay Prompts

These should demonstrating sharp, original thinking and showcase your writing at its best. On the tab labeled “Requirements” you will find three prompts. Please ensure that you read the instructions and submission requirements for each prompt carefully, answer each prompt.  The application prompts for the upcoming application cycle can be found below.

  Help us get to know you better. Please write three simple sentences (numbered 1-3) that give us some insight into you, your life, your interests, and your experiences. There are no right answers—feel free to be creative and think outside the box. (Three numbered sentence maximum.)

  Ex. Your response should be formatted like this:

2. Sentence two

3. Sentence three.

 

Prompt #2

What are you intellectually curious about? Introduce us to the life of your mind—what fascinates you, what intrigues you, and what questions you can’t stop asking. (Please do not simply restate your intended major here; we want to learn about the ideas that truly animate your intellect.) (2,500 characters)

 

Prompt #3

Why are you applying to join the Brock Scholars program? What opportunities do you hope to participate in when you’re here? How do you envision your role in the honors community? (2,500 characters)

Statement of Additional Information

Please upload your essay in .pdf, .doc or .docx format. What else do we need to know to get a better picture of you as a student and as a person? Please do not recap your resume or your transcript here. Instead, we want to know anything about you that doesn't appear in other parts of your application, but that would help us better understand your potential for the Honors College. This is not a space to upload your admissions essay, research paper, etc. (1,000 characters)
