Two-Factor Authentication
What is two-factor authentication (2FA) and why do we need it?
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is a University of Tennessee initiative to strengthen the security of all University user accounts. Duo Security has been selected to provide Two-Factor Authentication technology. As part of this initiative, UTC is implementing Duo and will require all benefits-eligible employees to use 2FA to access University business systems and resources.
We are all used to having one layer of security — our password — to protect our accounts. However, passwords aren’t getting the job done to protect the university and you against cyber attacks. To gain access to your account and a 2FA-enabled system at the University, you’ll be required to use two different sources (factors) to verify your identity:
- Something you know: your UTC credentials (abc123 with password), and
- Something you have: a phone or password. For example, this may be a smartphone or tablet using an app push notification or a hardware token device.
2FA boosts protection of your account from hackers. With 2FA, if the hackers have your password, they will still need your phone or passcode to get into your account. You have probably used this two-step process already for many online services.
Who will need Duo 2FA?
Once you sign up, some University of Tennessee applications that use the Central Authentication Service (CAS) will require Two-Factor Authentication. In addition to these services, all benefits-eligible UTC employees will require 2FA beginning October 1, 2020 to access HR services such as viewing payroll reports and participating in Open Enrollment.
Here are some examples of the systems that will require I 2FA:
- Zoom
- Taleo
- [email protected]
- ANDI
- Citrix
- IRIS
- Edison (Open enrollment)
Note: Presently, UTC systems and applications currently do not require 2FA. After October 1st, UTC Information Technology will be actively working to expand the use of 2FA.
Schedule of 2FA sign up walkthrough sessions.
We recognize the importance of 2FA and helping the UTC employees enroll before October 1, 2020. We have added more Zoom sessions to help you step through the 2FA sign up process. The schedule of sessions each week now through October 1st is:
- Mondays: 9:00am, 11:00am and 2:00pm
- Thursdays: 9:00am, 11:00am and 2:00pm
